I am looking to purchase a new 790 or 4100 compact tractor for a small farm I purchased with about 5 open acres on it. I will primarily use it for mowing and general farm maintenance but I have never owned a tractor before so I dont know much about reliability or the proper size to purchase. Which model is preferred and should I buy a 60" mid mount or a 60" rear mount rotary mower. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a 4100 tractor, works good for mowing, light brush cutting useing a 4 foot brush hog, and a drive a 58 inch tiller. It's too light a machine to pull much however. I probably has the power to pull a narrow disc but I don't think it would pull much of a plow, just can't get the traction even with 4wd. I suggest something heavier. Have a friend who has a 4200. Only 6 more HP but lots more pull since it weighs twice as much.

I've got a 4400 and wouldn't recommend anything small for your acreage. Be sure to get the new front end design. I you don't want to get into that much value, suggest a 1020 diesel or something else in 40 HP range.

Buy the largest you can afford - you will always find new uses for tractor. I have a 790, purchased in in June - also looked at 4000 series - the 790 is a old design that is proven with a 30 hp engine. I don't recall the actual hp but the 4100 was less, you had to get a 4300 to get hp larger than 790. I went with the 790 because it was more tractor for the money. My recommendation on the mower is to purchase a rear mount, easier to remove if you decide to do something where a mid-mount would get in the way. Also I recommend getting a loader. You will be amased at the uses. If one is not on your list, at least get the hydraulics that will permit one to be added later.
Good luck on your purchase.
