am investing in a couple of these kits for a 520 and 50. Have converted them to negative ground and per Green Magazine this should increase spark and performance. Anyone had any experience.

This has been an interesting discussion for me. I have a JD B that turned up hard starting this spring. I use it for hay making utility work, raking and pulling wagons mostly. It turned up hard starting this spring. We are now having to use reformulated unleaded gas. Don't know if this may be part of the problem. I put in new points, condenser, plugs, battery, and made sure the carburator was set to the book. You can "pop start" the tractor and it will run all day. The starter does not seem any slower than usual but it is definately not as fast as the 530 is. Sure conversion to 12V or electronic would probably help. Wonder if the starter is not turning fast enough to allow the development of a strong enough spark to fire the mixture? Anyone like to comment on that? Thanks. I've never minded to plead ignorance in order to learn something!

Try a analog voltmeter or an electronic with a low, max, average etc hold function. Find out what the voltage drops are, across the coil terminals and also test starter post to starter casting voltage. Anything below 4-1/2 volts you have lost about half the power six volts gives.

Not to disappoint the old points and condensor lovers and yes the economics may not justify the cost of the electronic versus having to buy several sets of points, BUT: The electronics provide superior spark performance because you get more arcing current, youre discharging more energy (volts times amps) across a generally wider plug gap to ignite the fuel, a fatter longer hotter arc, increased arc current surface area, and they generally dont start to degrade instantly like a mechanical switching device that is arced over and over eventually destroying and coating the points surface resulting in higher resistance and volatge drop across the switch as opposed to in the coil. Besides that, when the points close, they bounce and make temporary intermittent contact as compared to a solid state device which closes very fast. However, in my restored units, I sure wont use them to insure historical accuracy and keep the Correct Police from arresting me. Ol John T Engineer in Indiana

All true but I was thinking for the average parade and hay raking tractor the average owner would be hard pressed to tell the difference if correctly maintained. Some people do get the idea if they put a monster ignition system & premium fuel in an old beater they will double the engine power and fuel economy without any other changes.

If your tractor is stock & points ignition is maintained to 100% then you will not notice any power/economy improvements. Add compression or propane, alcohol, nitrous, nitromethan, excess oil in combustion chamber, borderline lean mixtures, wide plug gaps or lack of regular maintaince then a properly done electronic system wins all the way.

Chuck, I have this set-up in my 60 puller and I am very well pleased with it. I also purchased the higher voltage coil with the unit, and gap my plugs at .040", and probably could go even more. It will throw a spark nearly an inch, and will burn a half gas-half ATF mixture (that I put in the tractor for winter storage) and it will do it without fouling or smoking and runs smoothly. (I don't do this on a regular basis, of course.) Good unit- you won't be sorry. Hope this helps. Mike

Its hard to beat the Eletronic set-up, it is a little pricey compared to the points but you'll never have to worry about them again.. and very easy to install and neat.. Have them in most of mine.. Good luck

The kit from genessee for my 3020 gas was manufactured by Pertronix. Was very easy to install and also replaced the standard coil with one with an internal resistor so eliminated the inline resistor. Seems to work good, but the cost seemed high for what you get, but like i said , it works good.
