I have a 4020 gas, and was wanting to override the gov. just a tad to gain some RPM's, if it's not overly detrimental to the engine. Currently the 341cid turns around 2800. I was wondering was the proper way to override would be? plus how much is too much? I don't want to hurt this engine as it is a working tractor, but I just want to have alittle fun playing with it as well. Then again does a couple houndred RPM's mean that much when you're pulling. Let me know what you think, and what experience has tought you about this. Thanks Greg H.

As rpm increases past peak torque level the amount of airfuel mixture per revolution decreases and mechanical friction/windage losses increase. To a point horsepower increases with RPM until no more air/fuel mixture can be processed through the engine per minute even if it is turned even faster. The limiting factor are strength of components and airflow. Remember high school physics how centrifical force increases by the square of the RPM. The air flow of the engine will be limited by the size and shape of the aircleaner, carburator, intake manifold, head ports, valves, combustion chamber shrouding, exhaust system etc.

Greg, if your 4020 is already turning 2800, it sounds like it has been turned up already! Fast idle speed (with the foot throttle down) is 2650 RPM. Turn it up if you like, and it can be done, but I'd say you're "pushing the envelope" now. My humble opinion. Mike

I agree with Mike. you have a six cylinder with only 4 main bearings=weak lower end.
