JD400 Hydraulic fluid in the crankcase

I have a borrowed JD400 diesel from the middle 1970s. The hydraulic fluid suddenly went from full to empty and I could find no evidence that it hit the ground. I refilled the hydraulic fluid and started the machine. The fluid was then discharged from the valve cover breather tube. I rechecked the hydraulic fluid level (empty) and the crankcase oil (way over full). Any ideas how hydraulic fluid may be getting into the crankcase? Thanks -

The old 400 series tractors used an open center gear type, power steering pump, mounted on the timeing gear cover. It is gear driven from the timing gear train and has a lip type seal on its drive shaft. I think this is the only place this problem could occur. The shaft, bushing, and seal are likely worn, and parts are expensive. A new pump lists for $1006.78.

FYI -

Your diagnosis was correct. This tractor sat in a field for a number of years and the seals apparently dried out. It looks like the seal actually popped. The other parts seem to be in good shape. We are going to try just replacing the seal before investing the $1000 in a new pump. Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for the info. That must be why they changed the power steering design... I'll remove the pump tomorrow and see how it looks. I'm guessing I'll see something that's obviously bad, because the fluid transfer occurs at something like a gallon per minute.
