I have a '41 A with an 8v battery. There is no charging system on the tractor so I just use a plug-in charger. My question is: Is is safe to use the charger on 12v-2amps or should I use the 6v setting?

fyi about system power. The nominal operating voltage running with a charging system with a six volt system is up to 6.9v and a 8 volt system with 9.2volts. The electrical system operating at 133% of the rated voltage with use/produce 156% more power minus a little more voltage drop due to higher current levels. Certainly will brightn the lights but with a reduced lifespan. The coil will get warmer as well.

Zman, you have to charge a battery at more than its rated voltage to do any good, therefore if you have a fast charge on the 6 volt setting (maybe 9-10 volts)it will charge on the 6 volt setting. Your best bet is to put a volt meter on the battery & try to keep the charge rate around 9-10 volts. Much higher than 10 volts for extended periods will fry the battery & much lower than 8.5 volts will do no good. You might try the 12 volt setting with a head light ( both high & low beam) in series or a resistor in series to get the correct voltage. If you use the 12 volt setting make sure to monitor the voltage frequently to keep from over charging as the voltage will increase as it nears full charge. Most battery chargers will automatically adjust the amps to match the voltage output of the charger. Caution: most new battery chargers that will charge "maintenance free" batteries can put out 15+ volts on the 12 volt setting as these new batteries can stand a higher charging voltage than the old style battery.

Yo Z man, it all depends on the quality and type of charger of course, but I am not afraid to go out on a limb and say the 12 volt low amp setting wont hurt a thing. I doubt if set at 6 volts it will charge much if any. Try it and carefully observe how many amps its drawing at that setting and it will probably be fine. Of course, if it draws heavy amps and trips any safety fuses or circuit breakers in the charger or the battery boils or out gasses too much its no good to do that. John T

Thanks John, I'll play around with the two best settings and watch it carefully.

Hi Zman! I don't know about the charger, but would think hooking 12 v to it wqould be pushing it to the limit. Back when we had a 44 A for our big tractor, we ran 8 volt batteries all the time with the 6 v generator. The battery was always full charged. If I remember right dad had the regulater turned up a little bit. I always liked how bright the lights shined on that tractor! The 6 volt bulbs seemed to dtand it alright! Good luck to you! Don

Zman: Ya may want to check all the ARCHIVES listed over on the left side. Some chargers are better at regulating max CURRENT if the load voltage is too low. That helps in this case where your putting a 6 or 8 volt load on a 12 volt charging circuit. Does your charger limit the current when a NEAR DEAD 12 volt battery is connected?? If it does, it may just do the same hooked to a normal 6 or 8 volt battery and be OK. One high wattage 6 volt lightbulb in series with the 12 volt charger should also help limit the current(AMPS). I bought a very cheap 12volt trickle charger to play these games with. Make sure your FUSE (if there is one) is correct in the charger befor playing with it.. Good luck. harvey

Hi Zman ! Hook your charger up and with it running, check the voltage. I don't think the 6V setting would go high enough to put much in an 8-volt battery. 12 volt systems run at about 14.4 volts, so figure accordingly, it would take 9.5 volts to make the same impression on an 8 volt batt. I know my 6v runs about 7.6 volts, so that's too low. I assume it's been working on 12v so far, but you should have 2 more cells (each cell is 2.1 volts) to charge with 12v setting safely. The 2 amps won't hurt the 8v, but don't put on something heavier without those 2 more cells in the circuit. Clear as mud, right ? Later, Ron

Actually, I haven't charged the 8v yet. It must be a great battery because I have had it for several months (since last winter). So, are you telling me that 12v-2amps should be okay? I know the 12v-6amp is out of the question. When I tried the 6v-2amp this morning, it didn't look to be putting in much of anything.

I'll send you an e-mail with our garden update! It's really looking good and, well, I'll give you the details later.

Thanks, Zman.

Zman, I don't think a charger with a 2 amp max can hurt the 8v batt, but higher amperage from a charger capable of higher amps might not be good for it if left on very long. Every normal battery is 2.1 volts per cell, so the static voltage will be 8.4 volts. You need to exceed that to charge. If you have a digital voltmeter, it will tell you the story acurately. Shoot me some photos when you can of the crop. I just got back from Sask. with an 8-foot Case one-way and a single disc. The Case has wheels like a rail car, and is in nice shape - off the old family farm, so was glad to get it. I'm going to get a tow truck out this week to lift it off. Those one-ways aren't really headed in a direction that makes any other way possible. Catch you later, Ron
