CAN ANYONE HELP ? MY DAD & I RECENTLY TOOK OFF THE VALVE COVER ON HIS B TO SET THE TAPPETS. AFTER DOING SO WE DECIDED TO FIRE IT UP & MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS OK. WE NOTICED THAT THE TUBE THAT SUPPLIES THE OIL TO THE ROCKER ARM ASSY. ONLY HAS 2 HOLES. (1) ON EACH OUTER VALVE.
THIS ALLOWS OIL TO RUN OVER BOTH OUTSIDES BUT NOT SO MUCH AS A DROP TO EITHER INNER VALVES. WE LOOKED AT THE PIPE & MADE SURE THERE WERE ONLY 2 HOLES!!! IT APPERARS THAT IT NEEDS 4. HOW MANY HOLES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE TUBE? & IF ONLY 2 HOW DO THE CENTERS GET LUBED?

THNAKS, MIKE

There should only be two holes in the oil pipe. I bought a 1944 B that supposedly burned a little oil. Someone had improved it with extra holes over the intake valves. I replaced the oil pipe with the correct one and it hasn't burned any oil in the last 14 years. Paul

Mike, what you found is normal. Most John Deere 2 cylinders don't use valve seals on the valve stems so if oil was dropped directly on the intake valves they would suck oil into the combustion chamber on the intake stroke. The oil is dropped on the exhaust because they only have pressure in the exhaust port not vacuum (oil also helps cool them). The intake rocker arms & valves are oiled by splash (from the exhaust moving) & the oil mist that is in the crankcase & head area. That is why a John Deere 2 cyl. shouldn't be idled continously, it should be run a fast idle for a while each time it is used (especially after it has been parked for months or years). Also oil additives that make oil cling to gears & parts (like STP & those additives you see on the counter in auto parts stores shouldn't be used in J.D. 2 cyl engines because they make the oil cling to the parts & case & inhibit the splash process) "Note: this is just my opinion, observed over many years of testing & trying" I have seen a few J.D. 2 cyl's with a squeaky intake valve that used an oil additive, once the oil was changed & no additive used the valve noise wouldn't return.
