A useful item I'd like to share with you all. I do not use a top link with a 3 point brush hog. I use a heavy chain instead. This allows the deck to float over rough terrain better, and if the length is proper, will prevent bending of the shaft when going over a rise. Works great on with my JD 606 brush hog on the 3010, 530, or 820. Make sure the chain is heavy enough to not break under load.

There have been people maimed and killed from doing what you suggest. Never use a chain for a top (center) link on a shredder. You can however, and this is where the confusion comes in, use a heavy chain between the top of the shredder's hitch (where the tractor's top link attaches to the shredder) and the rear of the shredder deck. This will allow the same "float" you desire, with much more safety.

I've used a chain for a top link for years after picking up the trick from the state highway deparment crews. Never had a problem with this method and it saves bending a top link like I did on one occasion. This method allows the unit to flex over uneven ground. I haven't really worried about the unit flipping up and forward. I have a ROPS and I really dont think it would get through it.

There have been many discussions/warnings about this technique in the past. The theory is that without the solid top link, hitting a large stump or other immovable object with the front of the hog could cause it to pivot up on the lift arms on to the operator. Granted, this would have to be a huge collision but still something to think about. Mowing low grass on flat, familier terrain obviously reduces this risk.

Darryl, I hope you don't snag a stump with the 'hog housing. Better have that clutch ready all the time.
