I have a JD 60 and I'm a member of a small tractor club. We have several pulls a year and use a small sled that can stop tractors up to 10000 lb. When conditions are right we have to add chain to the sled to stop the tractors. I usally do well with a short drawbar but when the chain is added it seems better if I let it out one hole. Just wondered what your comments might be.

Your drawbar is a lever acting on the back of the tractor. When the drawbar is long, more leverage is applied to the tractor. Now when the sled chain is long, less downward force is applied to the tractor. When you lengthen your drawbar, you compensate for the long chain. If you were to pull with the drawbar lengthened and a short chain, you will lift the front easier. What you have to watch is the drawbar deflection. If the drawbar deflects to much, you create a long chain - short drawbar condition (less down force on the rear tires). Therefore, I believe (and use) in running a long drawbar if it is stiff enough to keep the deflection small. Add enough weight to the front to let the front tire skip. That is the trick.

These are my observations. Others might have a different opinion. Hope I didn't confuse you.
