Hey, I'm working on the charging system on this thing. The fellow that owned it put the batteries in it wrong and fried the generator, voltage regulator, and wiring harnass. I've replaced it all but now the points in the voltage regulator will weld shut when I shut it off. After that there is alot of arcing when you unhook the batteries till you break the points back loose. I've polarized the generator the way the book said to. And I've replaced the voltage regulator thinking it may have been bad. So any help will be appreciated. It's a 24 volt system with a positive ground. thanks ROBERT

The electrical system on the 3010 diesel is a little confusing and a little complicated. First it is not a true 24 volt system! It is only 24 volt when it is cranking! The generator and regulator has two seperate 12 volt systems. The batterty on the left side of the tractor positive cable goes to the solenoid on the starter, the negative cable goes to ground. The battery on the right side of the tractor negative cable goes to a post near the end of the starter on the engine side of the starter, the positive cable goes to ground. If you hook it up this way and there sparks then the starter needs to be checked by a generator shop. The IT series shop manual JD-203 has a wiring diagram for your tractor. Hope this helps. Zane

I just got a kit to convert the 24 volt system to a 12 volt system at the john deere dealer. This includes a new starter motor and a new alternater.
The dealer says 90 % of these tractors in this area are already converted with this kit. costof kit is around $430.
