I have a 1961 3010 Utility that is having steering problems. I bought it last July and it was hard to steer it. As the season wore on it became harder and harder to steer. Finally the wheels locked to the left and the steering wheel to the right. Had the steering column rebuilt, ended up loading it on a flat bed and taking it to a retired tractor mechanic. He fiddled around with it and cleaned a few valves and got it working. It worked about 3 months and then the steering started to get hard again. Took it back to the same guy and he hasn't been able to fix it. It doesn't seem to bleed out of the steering column. Anyone have any ideas? We have replaced the "priority Valve" and it still doesn't bleed. Of course that valve is no longer available so we got one off an old 4010.

I had forgot to mention in my original post that the mechanic had taken the steering column apart and found a broken spring. Then he put it back together and refused to believe that he had made an error in the valve adjustment. That is when he started to look at the priority valve problem. After he took the priority valve off an old 3010 rowcrop and fitted it to the utility and I brought him posts from this forum did he decide to check the steering column again. He checked the springs and valves to make sure all was ok and then put it back together making sure that the calibration was correct. Then it worked just fine. Got my tractor back Friday and have used it Saturday and Sunday both. Rain today, then back to cutting hay tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Bring it to someone who hasnt been retired for so long !!! If you have good pressure into the valve, then its internal. Those valves are not to bad to rebuild if you know what you are looking for. NOT a good project for the inexperienced

Those old poppet style steering valves are a nightmare to setup correctly. but as posted earilier, its sounds like its out of adjustement. Its definately a job for the tech that has been at your dealership the longest. They are not for the feight of heart to do....I know..I have done a few of em...and hated every minute of it.

Sounds like the valves are not adjusted correctly. They only have a 1.5 thouand clearance on the pressure and 3 thousand on the return valves. The priority valve only insures oil to the steering and brakes first. Look for broken springs and plugged holes in the side of the valves . This is not a job for somebody not trained on this valve . take the valve off and take it to a dealer . Hope this helps
