I have a 1964 4020 Diesel with a syncro-range. Pulling a diskbine in 5th gear it will heat up to the red on the temp guage on a hot day. Not in the red just up to it. Not pulling, the guage stays in the middle. Is this anything to be worried about? Thanks!

Take an extension cord,a hot plate, candy thermometer & a pot of water out to the tractor. Pull the temperature probe, stir vigourously and compare the thermometer & the temperature gauge. Don't let the thermometer & temperature probe touch the bottom of the dish. Take it right to a rolling boil & see what the gauge reads there as well, 212F less correction for elevation above sea level. Seen some fuuny readings. By the way this is how temperature sensors are calibration checked for nuclear reactors as well.

What you probably have is: the original temp gauge was calibrated for normal at 160 degrees. If you have replaced the thermostats with 180 Degree stats (which are the correct ones)You will run right up to the red . Deere said as long as you dont boil water out to not worry about it.( new gauges are calibrated to 180 for normal. However you probably have a radiator thats plugged inside . These radiators were barely large enough to begin with. With dirt inside as well as out you dont stand a chance on a hot day. Also a leaking head gasket will do this also . Hope this helps Don

I've got a 401 JD industrial at work that we set up to cultivate with. It runs very warm too. Found out the bottom hose on radiator is collapasing at full throttle, will change out soon and see if it helps this tractor. Just goes to red but not into it. My to bits. HB

We have a 1066 IH that when ever you put a load on it it would go to the red on the temp guage.
But it wouln't blow out any water so we put on a different guage and fixed the heating problem.

It could be one (or more) of several causes. Dirty screens or a clogged radiator could be part of the problem; clean them out with compressed air when the motor is stopped.

If the radiator hasn't been overhauled, it could be restricted with mineral deposits, which I think would be likely in a 36 year-old tractor.

My opinion would be to have a radiator shop take a look at the radiator core. The problem won't get any better, and the extra heat isn't good for the motor.

My 2 cents worth.

You need to blow or wash the outside of radiator & hyd oil cooler out regulary. dirt etc tends to block up the fins so air can not flow thru thus impeding heat transfer. if that doesn't help try different thermostat, if that doesn't then pull radiator & have it rodded. I'm assuming belt & pump are in good shape as well as valves!

I Agree. Make sure the Radiator is clean. Good Luck, Greg H.
