Just saw something about this a couple of weeks ago on "Motor Trend Trucks" on TNN. They used a kit to refurbish a gas tank. Started with an etching agent to remove the rust, along with a length of chain, and turned the tank around for a few minutes. Then a rinsing agent, and let it dry for a few hours. After that, they used an epoxy coating to put a new coating on the inside of the tank and seal any rust holes. Can't remember who made the kit, but sure you could do a web search or any auto restorer might know the name.

I saw the same show myself and couldn't remember either. Which is to bad since I have an old Land Cruiser w/ a gas tank in need of refurbishing. I just went to Por-15's website and thire gas tank restoration kit looks really familiar.

I heard of someone who puts a short length of chain in the tank and secures the tank in a portable cement mixer drum and lets it rotate. SAVES A LOT OF ELBOW GREASE

It's best to take it off the tractor and to a shop where it can be steam cleaned and checked for leaks. But--you probably don't want to go to that trouble. Then I would put several gallons of diesel or mineral spirits in it and agitate it through the filler hole with an air hose. Let it drain through filter cloth while agitating and pour the filtrate back in several times or until the filter starts catching less. Drain it and install a sediment bowl with a strainer. You'll probably be OK.

DON'T use anything around the filler hole that may cause a spark!
