I have a 420 that starts easily the first time each day. After getting up to operating temperature it will not restart if shut off until it has cooled down to air temperature. Does anyone know what would cause this problem and how to fix it?

Cecil, does it turn over slower when hot than cold? If it turns over the same it probably isn't the starter. With out knowing if your problem is cranking slow,or a fuel or ignition problem there are a few things you can do to try to isolate the problem. Try shutting the tractor down by turning the fuel off, then turn it back on just before you re-start it, if that helps it is probably flooding due to a leaking needle & seat or the little drain (bronze stone) in the bottom of the carb inlet being plugged. If the fuel shut off shut-down doesn't help you could have too much resistance in the battery cables. I'm assuming it is still 6 volt pos. ground, if so you should hook a jumper cable between the pos. battery post & a good clean ground on the engine or frame & hook a jumper cable between the neg. post on the battery the starter terminal on the starter where the battery cable is hooked to. If that helps the starting problem you have excessive resistance in one or both battery cables, remove one jumper cable at a time to see if the problem returns. It could be that someone has put 12v battery cables on it at one time. If the jumper cable test doesn't show you anything then make sure you are getting a good "BLUE" spark when the engine is hot, if it is yellow or other wise poor check the points & coil. One last thing, make sure it has "solid" steel or copper core ignition wires on it, if it has TVRS (carbon center) ignition wires on it you will have a poor spark when they get hot & the resistance goes up... Let us know what you find.

My 420 did the same thing - cranked slow and wouldn't start hot. I tried everything to improve cranking speed. Last winter I converted it to 12 volt. It now starts on the first revolution of the engine - nearly every time. Since this is a working tractor I need it to start on demand. I kept the generator and coil in case someone wants it original and hard to start.

Cecil, If you mean it wont crank over, check all battery terminals and connections and grounds and if the starter is still draggy, you may have starter problems. If it cranks but wont start hot, crank it and remove and check a plug to see if its wet (gas fouled and flodded) or dry (not enough gas). When the cylinders are hot, the gas fumes can be evaporated more easy, so try more choke unless the plugs show flooding in which case u need no choke to start. If its not a fuel problem, a hard hot start problem can be coil or condensor. I would replace points and condensor first since thats so cheap, and if the fuel is fine but it still is hard to start hot, I would be trying a new coil. Ol John T in Indiana

Cecil. Is this somthing that it just started doing, or have you just aquired the tractor? it may be your coil, but have you tryied choking it? or using a different throttle setting? My 420 will start when cold with some throttle and mild choke. But when hot will only start with the throttle in the idle position. An A that I have needs to be choked any time its started. all seem to have special ways. luck.

Thanks to everyone for responding. We have had the 420 for about a year. The 420 was restored and rebuilt by the previous owner. It runs very well and does not use any oil, but it has always been difficult to restart unless it has had time to cool down. It seems to me that the engine turns over very slowly when starting. I thought that was a characteristic of the 2 cylinders. My Ford 2N turns over much more quickly than the 420. We put a new battery with 600 CCA in the 420 this week and it still turns over slowly. Could the starter be at fault or is this normal? Thanks for the help.

My 40 which is similar also likes to be choked every time it starts, whether hot or cold. Probably the design of the carb on these machines.
