I have my 1950 Model "A" almost completely restored except the clutch. The problem lies on the crankshaft that holds the disc or the disc that mounts on the shaft. There seems to be a lot of play between the two even with the center bolt tightened down. I was wondering if by shimming the two together would solve the knocking. What would I use for shims? Is there an adapter or something available???? Running but can'

I HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM.AND HAVE FOUND TWO GOOD WAYS TO FIX, YOU CAN WELD UP THE SPLINES ON THE CRANK IT WILL NOT HURT A THANG,IF YOU DONT FELL LIKE YOU CAN DO THIS YOUR SELF TAKE THE CRANK TO A LOCAL MACHENE SHOP AND HAVE THEM DO IT FOR YOU. OR YOU CAN BUY A TAPERD LOCK USED TO REPLACE FLYWHEELS AND DRIVE DISK ON WORN SPLINES THERE IS AN ADVERTIZEMENT FOR THESE LOCKS UNDER PARTS AND SUPPLYS TO THE LEFT OF YOUR SCREEN. I HAVE USED BOTH OF THESE MYTHEDS ON PULLING TRACTORS AND THEY WORK GREAT

Jim, you can try shims between the crank & the drive disc, but they won't last very long. The only lasting repair is to replace the worn parts with non-worn ones. If the crank is worn it is a difficult repair, if it is the drive disc that is worn just replace the drive disc. "Dengler Tractor Inc." 1-513-423-4000.. carries an undersized drive disc for most John Deere 2-cyl. tractors to be used on worn crankshafts. I haven't used one myself but have talked to others that have, & some restorers say they work good & others say they have come loose after prolonged usage. Years ago I built a 70 gas crank up with weld & ground it to be a tight fit with a die grinder ( tremendous amount of work) now if I find a lot of wear on the crank splines I just put in a used crank with good splines. If you aren't going to take it apart soon, you can try? a product made by Loc-Tite called "quick metal" it is made to take the slop out of splines & loose pulleys. There again it will probably work for a while but because of the load & firing pulses on a J.D. 2-cyl. it probably won't last long if you are working it, or running it hard. This is a sore spot on J.D 2-cyl's & worth checking closely before buying a tractor.

If you weld the crank up you lose what hardening there is in the crank and it will wear off again.

Jim, we are talking about the crank splines to the splines in the clutch drive disc. There are no moving parts there & hardness isn't an issue. As long as the disc is tight on the crank & kept tight there will not be any wear. I did a 70 about 15 years ago & it is still being used as a worker by a friend of mine & hasen't come loose yet. Just to be sure he checks it every time he adjusts the clutch.
