Bronze pieces found in crakncase?

I was changing the oil in a 1946 Model "A" and happened to notice a piece of metal resting across the drain plug hole. With a little time/tools, I was able to extract several pieces of what looks like bronze from the bottom of the crakncase. The tractor runs fine, the clutch seems to operate normally.

In total, I extracted 4 pieces and a lockwasher. The largest piece of bronze is a bout 1/4" x 3/8" x 2" long. It has circular machining marks. Like the others, it was definitely "sheared" off. One of the edges is extremely rough.

Any ideas on what bronze parts could break and end up in the crakncase. I browsed the parts catalog and the only thing I can find (made of bronze) close is a clutch fork but, I don't think it can make it's way to the crankcase.

I'm hoping it's remnants from an old repair that the previous owner(s)never bothered to collect the broken parts from.

Ideas ?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike Alyward is correct. It might be an old piece from a previously broken clutch fork, or it might be from the present. If the clutch works OK, it is probably from an old repair.

Mike, it is possible for part of the clutch fork bearing to make it's way into the crankcase. There is an oil drain hole in the side of the case that lets engine oil out to the reduction gear cover. To know for sure, take out the four bolts holding the clutch fork shaft, and with the clutch disengaged, pull out the fork. It will be obvious if that is indeed the problem. Like you, that is about the only brass piece in there, short of the pulley bushing. Hope this helps. Mike

Mike; You had better let the ole girl rest until you can pull off the oil pan and take a look around. There is no way that clutch parts can find their way into the crankcase. To run your machine with spare parts floating around in the oil pan is asking for a problem. Good luck! Tugboat
