My 730D occasionally wants to jump out of 2nd, 4th, and reverse. The shifter will also lock up requiring removing and aligning everything to get going. Any ideas on the problem and solution?

does it only jump out in these gears or are those the ones you use most? There is a latch on the overdrive shifter on late 730d"s that will allow the trans mission to jump between over drive (right side of shift pattern)and under drive (left side of shift pattern) when it is worn. The overdrive shifter is top front when the cover is off. I have also saw where the countershaft has enough end play to strip the threads off the nut at the left end of the countershaft.

I use those gears a lot, but certainly not exclusively. If it's the overdrive latch, are there any sources other than the dealer? What's involved in replacing it--or can it be built up? Thanks.

If the overdrive latch is worn it should jump out of other gears also. When it does the trans cover has to be removed to line the shifters up again if this doesn't describe your problem. Expect to have to tear down the trans and find worn gears or bearings.
The overdrive latch is not availible from deere but can be built up.
