On JD 730 with a 24 volt electrical system, when I ground the two 6 volt batteries that are to be grounded to the seat box, the generator motors. What is Wrong?

1-800-522-7448 for a real Deere wiring manual for all two cylinder Deere. There has been over forty years of tinkering done by people without a manual so every little thing has to be double checked.

I believe I'd be removing the wires from the generator & looking for a fault to ground inside the generator.

Mike, like twopop points out, if you connect voltage to a generator it acts like a motor (DC Motor and Generator are basically the same thing), but when the tractor shuts down the connection between the armature and battery in the voltage regulator (cutout relay) should open to not permit battery discharge. If its the type of voltage regulator with a removable cover you can see if the cutout relay points are stuck, but once that happens you have to light sand to clean them but once that happens and arcing and heat has destroyed the silver coating, they may stick again. However Im still confused, a 24 volt generator is used at the 24 volt point being the far ends of all 6 volt batteries and there is that center point ground connection to furnish 12 volts to the 12 volt loads, and that makes it seem like it should still motor even if the center point ground is on or off. I think the points in the voltage regulator are stuck closed.
