H head gasket

I overhauled my 1940 H last summer & bought a head gasket from a supplier of H parts. It was solid soft copper, not the usual Copper/aluminum asbestos gasket I usually got from Deere. I used it anyway & torqued the head to specs. This spring I found about a cup of coolant in the oil and a few drops of coolant on the spark plugs. Since I have owned this tractor for 27 years I am pretty sure nothing is cracked and I have a leaking head gasket, especially because I have water in both cylinders. Anybody have any experience with solid copper head gaskets? Were they something Deere used when the tractor was new? I didn't retorque the head after I ran the engine a while, never had any problem in the past using the asbestos style gasket. Should I have retorqued it? Should I try to retorque it now or just go back to an replacement gasket from Deere? Bad thing is my nephew put a really good paint job on it and I'll surely skin it all up with this work. Thanks, Paul from Michigan

Decided not to wait on a reply, I went ahead and got a new gasket from John Deere and replaced the leaking one. When I removed it I checked the torque on the head bolts and it was fine. The gasket showed signs of leakage at the top of both cylinders. I checked the haed and as I suspected it is flat and doesn't show any visible cracks. I'll know in a few days if I fixed it. If any body has any advice let me know. Thanks, Paul
