I seem to remember dad's B to have an unusually slow low gear. Maybe time has distorted my memory.

Leo,

Your memory is intact - the late styled B's did have a 1 1/2 mph first gear, as did the A's when they switched to the single lever gearshift in around 1950 or '51. A brochure I have, from 1947, gives the A low gear ground speed at 2 1/2 mph. High gear on the B was 10 and the A was 11 2/3.

The "granny gear" was great for the first corn cultivation.Didn't throw dirt over the plants. But boring,oh man.You get to daydreaming and take out corn anyway.

Good, thanks, I am not losing it yet! I would think that tractor would work good on finishing mowers and tree planters, etc.where you need extra slow at full throttle.

Yes, the late styled B's had a lower gear ratio. They seemed to also have a very low ground speed in high (6th) too. There was a distance of about 3 miles between farms where I grew up and the B took forever. The MM model Z however, was another story. I learned to mash my hat down on my head really tight when driving that tractor.
