What would the clearance be for a 7-3/8 diam. alum. piston? How much do you leave after boring for finish honing? I have a precision hone not a flex spring type.

Thanks ,Al

Hey Al...This is assuming you miked the piston and it is a true 7.375 inches, then allowing .001 per inch diam, you need to finish hone the bore out to 7.390. Do the math. .001 per inch equals .0075 side clearance( this is all the way around piston). .0075 times 2 equals .015 plus 7.375 equals 7.390. This will be what you need for a runnable, snug fit in that G (I'm assuming that is what it is going in). Good luck..Doug in Tx

Doug,
Yes it is going in the G,Schooler told me to run .028-.030 that seems to sloppy don't it?
His reasoning was you need the room for expansion. I think that would cause alot of blow by and be hard on the rings.I plan to use a water pump on it and the tops of the pistons are ceramic coated. If I bore this myself what do they usually leave for finish honing? I have a precision sizing hone not a spring loaded jobber.

Thanks,Al in Pa.

I sure am glad Doug S. is NOT my machinist. Those pistons should have .007-.0095 inch clearance. If you set the clearance to what he says they will rattle down the bore. I usually bore to .001-.002 inch under the low clearance, then hone the bores to a final size of just over minimum. How close you bore to final size depends on your cutter and cut speed. I don't have a precision hone so that could make a difference. You might call a local machine shop and ask their advice.

Which is exactly what you are supposed to do doofus! When you finish hone, your measurement should be just at or over the final product. How you do it is not a concern of mine!

Then why did you tell him to bore it to 7.390 when it should have been bored to 7.3825 minus .001-.002 for honing? Obviously how I do it is a concern of yours or you wouldn't have replied!
