One of the remotes on my 65 4020D is leaking. It is fine when there are no hoses in but when I put a hose in it starts to leak on the opposite end of where the hose goes. I assume there are seals inside but don't know how to get to them. How do I repair this and are there any special tools required?

Thanks,

Phil

Phil, After rereading your post again I see you said it was leaking on the opposite end of hose, Sorry for not catching it right the first time. There is a kit that will need to installed in it like the other guys already mention. It is not really that difficult. Remove the outlet assembly (two 1/2" bolts and two hydraulic lines) Either rebuild it yourself or you can take it to the dealer. To rebuild it yourself you pop out the two soft plugs by punching a hole in them with a punch and disassemble it by removing the two snaprings retaining the levers and pull it apart. Replace all orings and backup rings furnished in the kit. You will have left over orings and packings in kit as it is for several types of outlets. There is one oring in the center of the spool that requires some difficulty in removing a snapring to replace it but I would not worry about it because it is not where it is leaking and is not worth the frustration of changing it. I always replace the 12 balls that retain the tips in as they will wear and replace the two snaprings and springs that retain the levers as they also get weak and will help keep the levers latched when in use. These parts are not furnised in the kit. Sand all burrs and rust from the diameter of the spools as this is what caused the seal that are leaking to leak. Lubricate and reassemble holding parts in place with lots of grease. Good Luck!! Dave W.

Phil, I would echo everything Dave mentioned. I would add, though, that I have had better luck using the o-rings and backup rings on the spools instead of the spool seals that are furnished in the kits. They (the o-ring set-up) just seem to last longer. There is a special tool to install the seals (haven't used it for years, though). Both set-ups are furnished in the kits. Hope this helps. Mike

Phil, This is no big deal, Go to the JD Dealer and pick up the Quadring and Backup-ring for the rear outlets. These seals can be installed without taking anything apart, They are installed inside the diameter of the outlet bore where the male hose tip plugs in. There is two pieces that go in a groove inside each outlet bore. One is a rubber Quadring (looks kind of like an Oring) installed towards the front of tractor, The other is a Backup-ring (White nylon layered washer) installed toward the rear of the tractor. You poke these in the hole with a oring pick or similar tool. The trick to putting them in is put the backup ring in first and then the rubber quadring second through the center of the backup ring leaving the white backup ring to the rear of the tractor (toward you). If you install the rubber first you will play hell trying to get the backup ring in and it probably will be damaged in the process. Good Luck!! Dave W.

Let Your John Deere dealership or local dealership work on it. Lots of little parts and seals that could be put back on wrong. My local dealership charged me $50 plus parts
