I have a 4040 with quadrange that is stuck in the lower range. It will not shift to the top and shifting to reverse locks it in forward and reverse at the same time. Any advice?

It would be my guess that you have a gear seized on the top shaft of the transmission. If the tractor has been towed without the trans in tow position, this happens.

Elton, Sounds like that your problem is internal but before you take it apart unhook the shift control linkages at the shift arms on the right side of the transmission and try to shift the tractor at that point to make sure it is not a linkage problem. Do this on a level surface with the engine OFF so you don't get rolled or run over!! Once you have determined if the problem is linkage or internal you can proceed in that direction. Top arm is you left shift lever (1-4 and reverse) and bottom arm is your right shift lever (A-D ranges and PARK). If the problem is internal and is related to the 1-4 and reverse lever (top arm on transmission) You can remove the top transmission cover to take a look and see what might be wrong. If it is shifter or synchronizer related the tractor will have to be split to be repaired. If you want more instruction on that let me know and I will tell you what you will need to know to do that. The mechanical design of the transmission is the same as a 4020 but will require some equipment to service. Kind of sounds like from your description that it might be staying in PARK?? Until then, Dave.
