I had a problem with water getting into the crankcase on a later model A. After redoing the head and replacing the block I still had the problem. I finally discovered that rain water was leaking in around the clutch fork shaft where it goes into the reduction gear cover. That gear cover on my A has a drain hole in the bottom that lets oil drain back into the crankcase. After I started covering the tractor the problem disappeared. My .02 cents worth.

Wanna be a JD owner, all the other posts are a possibility so check them out. If the tractor was parked outside it might be as simple as water gitting in the air intake or exhaust. Pull the oil cup for the air cleaner & check for water in there. If you can drain the oil with the engine hot then let it cool & see if water runs out after the oil is gone for a while. Let us know what you find.

Doug and Ray are right on your water problem. I once owned a 38 A , and I worked the head and overhauled the block, with new rings. For some strange reason I kept getting water in the oil. I pulled the head and had it tested , I put new tubes in the head, Still water in the oil. I pulled the block off the tractor and had it checked, it tested good. I put it all together for the third time, NO water in the oil. The only thing different about the last time and the other takedowns was I pulled the block and when I went back with the block I changed the block to crankcase gasket. This is something you might check if the person did an inframe overhaul. Talk with the person who overhauled the A and see if they did an inframe overhaul. I liked to have gotten a stick of dynomite to my A until I found the problem. Hope this will help you

On an old A like this, if you are sure the head gasket and block are good, along with the way the head was put on in general, look at the brass pushrod guides that are installed in these heads. Maybe someone used a too long bolt in mounting the intake/exhaust manifold. Or they could just be leaking around the seam where they press against the head. Park your tractor downhill and pull the valve cover, if these tubes are leaking, you will see it. They are easily replaced and Deere sells them for around $25 apiece. The other "Goo-Roos" might add some more, but this is a good place to start...Doug in Tx

About 7 months ago I bought a 43 A that was "recently" overhauled...anyway to make a long story short ended up there was a pin hole in the right cylinder wall cleared back next to the base of the water jacket, a little forward of where the wiper ring is at at BDC. I wasn't getting any water in the top of the cylinder just in the crankcase. From what I have heard it is pretty rare to have a block rust through, but something to consider. Just my $0.02 worth.
