Thanks Dave & Rick for your replys on my past 2440 question. I will check engine tag, but the chassis tag says Iowa.

this 2440 is pretty good tractor, but i do have two problems. 1.) Will not start cold in temps below 50 degrees and 2.) with the rockshaft DRAFT control in the top hole [least (no) amount of draft control] the rockshaft won't drop down. I have to put draft control selector in second from top hole or lower hole for the rockshaft to drop. Yes i have adjusted system per S.M. - after i do, it sometimes works for a little while and then goes back to "no drop" problem. ideas? I plan on pulling rockshaft cover/arms when i get a break in work and look for bent/worn parts in draft system.

I just got done with a 401B...the tractor is about the same as 2440, maybe a little heavier in the front end area...the parts I used were ordered for a 2440...mine did as you said ..had scored cylinder...had to put in new parts..cylinder and piston...the new piston seal was at the back of the piston..the old one had seal at front of piston..wonder why they did this????? may because they had problems.????
Well hope this helps have nice day.. may god bless

Drawbar, Your tractor was built in Dubuque Iowa and the engine will have a Rosa Master Brand injection pump on it as well. The German tractor used a rotary Lucas brand pump. Sounds like you have something loose in your draft control valve linkage and taking it apart for a look is what I would do also. The hard starting problem you described sounds like a low compression problem to me. If the tractor starts fine when the ambient temperature is higher tells me that the lack of heat generated by compression at colder temperatures is your problem. This may be do to wear or may not I have seen tractors that were overhauled start harder afterwards than they did before they were reconditioned. What can happen is when valve grinding work is performed on the valves and seats the valve rescission depth in the head is not maintained and the valves are placed to low in the seats which lowers the compression and effect starting in a big way!! If the tractor has other signs of wear like oil consumption and or blow by out the crankcase breather it probably is low compression due to wear. If you know if this problem has been there since engine work has been performed on it I would take a look at the valve recession in the head. Good Luck!! Dave W.

OK. I see. Yes, there is blowby [smoke 0ut the breather. A dealer guy said , it's OK don't worry about it. yeah. Oh, I'm not worried. but i bet your right. Unless i do valve job myself, how would i know if they are done right? gota go.
