Hello,
I have some experience with IH, but none with John Deere. I am going to an auction soon where there is John Deere A & B on consignment. I have zero experience with John Deere but would like to try one out for fun. They are both styled, narrow fronts. What should I look for as far as mechanical integrity. What is prone to be wore out or broken on the John Deere.
Thanks a bunch,
Aaron

You could make sure the splines on the clutch side of the crank are good. I've seen a few that were wore and someone shimed the drive disk with tin strips.

The older A's and B's are fairly simple and easy to figure out. Sheet metal is important, as replacements are quite expensive. Otherwise, they just seem to be a somewhat high-priced tractor, but very enjoyable.

Look at axle where goes into casting. If leaking 90 wt fluid and it's brown (like rust) might mean new bearings and/or seals. Not terribly tough job but the bearings are not cheap.

My $.05 worth.

Most of them old As and Bs didn't have much problems, at times the cluth can be a problem but its a easy fix. Your biggest problem will be getting usto the pop of a johnny. The old Johnnys have a lot of pull for 10 yards or so and there good tractors. Hope this helps some
