Need some help. I have a '67 4020 with PS, dual hyd, that I picked up at an auction (definitely a keeper). Previous history has been traced to a farm in Kansas, but total time on engine is unknown. It's a real workhorse, starts easily, and runs good - but it has some blowby oil that comes out of the base of the muffler and around the exhaust manifold. The oil is very dark and gooey. I haven't been able to tell yet if it's worse after sitting for a couple of weeks or when run daily. Any ideas whether this is indicative of worse things to come? Any easy fixes besides a valve/head job? Thanks!

It's not oil, it's unburned fuel, mixed w/black soot from the ex. pipe. Like someone else said, work it & it should clear up. It could be a bad injector, but if it's been idled around an auction yard, it's prob. just slobbering fuel from running too cold.

On 4020d from 201000 ser # down JD used a air pump mounted on the left side of the engine,in front of the intake manifold. if this pump has gone bad it can pump oil into the air intake manifold and the oil will come out the exhuast, especially at idle.you can take this pump out and remove the working parts and put the cover back on,as the pump is not needed, also cut and plug the air line going to the manifold.

oil at ex. manifold could accumulate during prolpnged idle-noload operation. try to do some work that requires medium to heavy engine load for a few hours and see if it helps.

Ive seen a lot of 4020s the same way.your engine is a little worn but not worn out by any means. My 756 slobbered for years. I didnt rebuild untill the white smoke started. Most of the 4020s ive seen at sales that have bin worked have the same condision. I personally would run it.
