I am restoring a 2010 Utility Row Crop (gas) and as I was putting it back togeather I had to connect the coil wire to the "I" terminal of the starter switch. The tractor only runs when the switch is turning the starter.
The manual states that there is a ballast resister on the back of the switch ( I have none). John Deere says you cannot purchase just the resister but have to buy the whole switch. Does anyone know
what the resistance of this resister is? Perhaps I can buy an seperate ballast resister from an automotive store.
Also, sure would be nice to find the hood John Deere nameplates in good shape.

Tim, the ballast resistor is about the same ohms resistance of the coil (it drops about 6 volts and leaves 6 across the coil) and is around 1 to 2 ohms depending on the coil you have. You can buy a seperate ballast block resisitor and wire it in series with the switch if you dont want to buy a new switch. The reason it runs when youre starting, is the ignition terminal is designed to be hot (12 v direct to coil no ballast) only when cranking, so it effectively by passes the ballast when cranking but then drops out leaving the coil in series with the ballast. If its designed for ballast and you dont use any, the coil runs hot, and the points draw excess current and burn out quickly. Ol John T Engineer in Indiana

I would appreciate if you could clarify for me this ballast resistor thing. I have a 1010 that had bad wiring so I rewired it with negative ground and with an alternator. I put a new coil on it and connected negative terminal to distributor. I checked resistance/impedance across the neg/pos coil terminals and got about 2 - 3 ohms. For some reason the tractor ran great for about a month of light duty but now it will only run with choke fully out. Could this have anything to do with me not using a resistor on the ignition to coil circuit? I've completely checked out the fuel lines and carb and they seem to be working OK so I'm suspicious of an ignition problem. From a post some time ago someone told me it could be something like the fire breaking down???? Any advice would be appreciated.

You can purchase a ballast resister at your local parts store. I think you can purchase the nameplates from K&K antique tractor parts.
