I couldn't wait

I was down in my second home,(shop)Friday night and it was one of those times when everything fell into place.I worked about 4 hours getting things like the steering shaft, steering wheel, and sheetmetal together. That ole 70 ain't hit a lick in 19 years according to the previous owner.I thought I might as well hook up the batteries and see if it would spin over ok.It did,and one thing led to another and I decided to just see if it would crank.I turned the switch on and pulled the choke and pushed the starter button and POP POP POP it ran like a sewing machine. The reason I said I couldn,t wait was I do not have the clutch together yet.So I cranked it without it even on the tractor. And for those who have been keeping up with my clutch woes,I took my clutch wheel to a machine shop and the man fixed me right up for twenty bucks. He said it is probably stronger than it was originally.I am going to try to put the clutch wheel on tomorrow and drive that sucker.Later fellas,Jack(TN).

Jack how did you finally get that gear off,did you use a big puller and press set up,when Mr.Cornett (He's 82) pressed mine off I got behind a column he had 60 ton about maxed out,boy when it did move it made a big bang. You mess with the tractor pullers in your neighborhood. Later Gman

Gman I got it off with a big jaw puller at the dealer.I pulled against some people in my area last year with the 1952 G I had but regretfully sold.Man that thing would pull.It just would not give up in first gear,so I got brave one night and tried it in second and that loaded the wagon. She went down to the very last stroke.I am hoping this 70 with these 125 thousanths Clevite pistons will do as good or better than the G.I am going to break it in first and then pull the ears back on it.Look out Farmalls.

Jack, it sounds like things are finally looking better. Thats good news on the clutch & starting. Keep up posted on your progress. Maybe you should also buy a lottery ticket now that your luck is running better.

Well,as a matter of fact I did buy a lottery ticket last night across the Kentucky,Tennessee border, but I wasn,t that lucky.HB,I could not get my clutch to snap and no matter how much I adjusted I could not make it happen,so I went into the pulley itself.I compared the new clutch toggles to the old ones and they were quite a bit longer than the old ones. I broke one of the ears off that holds the pins which hold the dogs in place.Word of advice, dont take a hammer and punch to a stuck clutch dog pivot pin.Them keepers are not very tough. The local machine shop welded it with a tig welder and he also heated the area all around the area to be welded. It looks real good, but we'll see how tough it is.Later,Jack(TN).

If you think about it, Im sure it will be tough enuff. If it was so weak that it broke that easy, whatever he did to it must be better than what you had.

I've never had one do that, I just have a hard time getting the gear off to get to them.

Jack, That was cheap enough. Glad to hear you are finally having some good luck. I saw an old 70 last night at the pull. Happy Poppin.
