I have a John Deere LA that I want to convert to a 12 volt system. Where do I find a 12 volt starter that will fit my LA? Thanks, AWB

AW, If it were mine I wouldnt bother to even change the starter until she went bad which may not be in your lifetime. I have changed many many to 12 volt and never ever changed any starters. As long as they dont keep turning over for an extended period of time, they arent hurt. Be sure to add a ballast resistor in series with the coil and change any bulbs to 12 volters. Also, I have changed many using the existing generator buy just changing to a 12 volt regulator and polarizing them. A genearator dont know how many volts its supposed to be, thats increased by turning them faster or increasing field current which many fields will still handle a long time before they ever go bad, however, if its a 3 brush genearator with no regulator, that dont work as well. If it has to turn over very long you can sling the windings out of the armature

Just use the 6 volt starter. It's tougher than the 12 volt starter anyway. Won't hurt it as it won't be turning very long any way.....

Take the starter to someone who rebuilds starters and he can comvert it to 12 volt's.
