I have been looking at an MT John Deere tractor for the last year and a half. The gentleman that owns it is retired and lives in an old house with no indoor plumbing or phone. I approached him about a year ago and asked if he would sell. He was very nice and said he would take $500.00. I told him I would think about it. I decided to return to the tractor and look it over again. I had to cut down the multiflora rose to get a good look at it. The hood is off and he had it covered with an old piece of tin and a cedar fence post on top to keep the tin from blowing off. Just by looking at it I can tell it needs 2 new front tires, a rear tire and 1 rear rim, a complete new seat including the metal bracket, a steering wheel, new gauges, and the brakes need to be reworked ( one is off and the other locked so the rear wheel won't turn). It looks like there is not any water in the oil and it is at the proper level. I can't tell if the motor is stuck or not since the wheel won't turn. I went back and offered him $350.00 but, he said he had to have $500.00. My question is am I too cheap or is he asking too much?

If you really want the tractor, the $150 shouldn't make a lot if difference, overall. It does sound like quite a project. Be prepared to spend $2000 on it. It does sound like a good project though. You will enjoy doing it.

Good question. I have an MT restored to mint condition and would not take $5000 for it. Of course it has been in the family since the day it was a baby, but even so, I would not sell it.

It was parked outside when the family stopped farming with it. The muffler rotted off and next thing you know the motor was very stuck. Even the transmittion was stuck. We had to burst the pistons to remove them. The tranny had a bearing gone that we could not find and ended up building a bronse bushing to replace it. (It was an idler gear and this patch should last longer than us) Between turning the crank, getting the block ready, the head, pistons, sand blast and paint, oil seals, seat, steering, gauges, stickers, 4 tires (which by the way are not the most common in the world), and a host of things I try to forget, we spent around $2500 restoring it and did all the work ourselves over a 2 year period.

Confused yet? What is the tractor worth to you? I would pay $500 for a MT if all the parts were there and usable. Rebuild it, and enjoy it for the rest of my life. Or, you might find one restored for around $3500. I have seen them for sale from $2500 to $5000. Depends on how bad you want it and how bad someone wants to sell. Bottom line, $500 doesnt seem bad to me.
