We have just finished up a little '36 B and are having a hard time hand starting it. If you pull it 2-3 ft she starts right up, but you can pull on the fly wheel all day long. The first day we finished the tractor, it started like a dream, one-two pulls and she was off and running. But something happened after that day. Ever since it has been very hard to start. The carb and mag are from Dennis Poke. We even sent the carb back and exchanged it for another and still the same problem. The head had the works done to it, and the block was sleved, and a good set of piston were rerung. The points are set at 15. We have not put a timing light on it to make sure that it is 100% correct on the timing, but she seems to run good once she starts.. Just looking for some Ideas here, I know we're not the only ones that have had a hard time with these old hand crankers.. Thanks guys....

Been there done that and got the T Shirt. Hey old G nut buddy the trouble is youre used to those heavy old G's and this is a lil baby sister of a B. I doubt if the carb is the problem. What you describe (hard hand starting but easy if pulled) is a classic symptom of a weak spark. A mag puts out a BETTER SPARK THE FASTER SHE TURNS and thats why you need a fast acting spring trip over to fire at all under hand cranking speeds you see. Take the plugs out and observe when the impulse trips versus where the left hand impulse timing mark is on the flyweheel to try and see if youre firing too late. Too early timing causes a kick back of flywheel while too late makes them harder to start. You indicate the mag is new??? or was it just a used one??? I would install new points and condensor and new Autolite plugs and check the timing then take two aspirins and call me at the office and we will go from there. Before this seasons shows, Im installing a new higher voltage coil and new points and condensor in my 38 B Wico C mag myself. A weak impulse spring or draggy trip also causes a weak spark at cranking you know. Ol John T in Indiana

We got some time this afternoon to mess with the B. Did the old trick of sticking finger in the plug hole and finding TDC and listening for the impulse. Found that we were firing way too late. Adjusted the timing by turning the inside of the Mag, until we got it close. Then fine tuned it with the slide adjustment. We got her so she starts on the first pull.. Thanks for the help.. We'll see how she acts in the morning.. later ya'll.

Listen to the Mag as you crank it and as it runs. When cranking, does the impulse coupling trip make a good solid, sudden clunk each half turn of the crank? If not, check the impulse coupling spring for breakage or incorrect windup. If the mag is noisy when running (ought to be silent) or if the impulse trip is there but sluggish when cranking then there might be gunk, rust, plain old crud or all three between the rotating magnet and the pole pieces. Remove the mag & turn opposite the running direction, (CW) as you look at the drive coupling. It ought to roll very freely. You ought to be able to easily feel the tugging of the magnet on the pole pieces every half turn and the magnet's strength ought to be able to turn the shaft as you near the polarity changes. If not, take it all apart & clean, adjust or replace as needed. You never know what you'll find wrong in somebody else's mag you just bought! On the C series mags the shaft bushing gets loose in the housing & lets the magnet hit the pole pieces. Sometimes if you're lucky, careful staking and loctite can provide temporary relief for this affliction.

The magneto is faulty. If it's a Wico C, the bushings are worn and allowing the armeture to rub on the fields, thus not allowing the impulse to do its job. The mag will need to be taken apart, cleaned and probably new bushings installed. A new set of points and condensor should be installed at that time.Could also be very rusty inside on the armeture.
