Ed Read is it power steering or manuel,if it's power steering, there's a little valve on top of pedesral,if the spring breakes it will cause you similiar problems, and this dude is hard to find. Gman

have had this problem several times. The worm gear is worn and so is the drive gear. Also clearance between the two gears might be off. The best fix is to take the complete worm assembly off. Then loosen the pedistal bolts, also the top gear raise it up and rotate the gear 180 degrees. Will be on new surface then, then adjust the worm assy with new shim gaskets etc. What is happening, the gears are a little galded and they are binding.
