Have a JD 3020 diesel. Recently it would only idle then die. Was advised by several on this message board that the governor flex ring had deteriorated and the small parts of the ring had been forced in to the return line and plugged it. I disconnected the return line and cleaned it. That was indeed the problem. Now the engine runs fine, actually better than ever. Thanks to everybody for the help. Interested in how long the pump might run before seal failure, head siezure, etc. What is the most likely way the pump will fail?

i dont think the head can fail because of this, but he governor could give you fits.fix it now before it costs much more.

I plan to change out the pump. I was interested in knowing some of the early symptoms that the ring was deteriorated. Is is possible but not likely that the pluggage was from something else. I never could collect enough of the plugging material to tell what is was. Would governor failure cause engine runaway or would the manual engine stop always work? Would pins internal to the pump shear and the head just stop pumping? Could the pump drive shaft be sheared. Just curious as to how bad bad can get if the pump was not changed out.

You will eventually shear the pins on the governor cage. It will run away...but you will be able to shut it off. Any time you have bits of steel (from the pins) floating around in a rotary pump, you risk the chance of head siezure and scrapping the

When the pin wear off of the govenor ring your tractor will rap out and you will just have to watch it blow .It may last 50 hours or 10 hours or 600 hours but its gona happen.

This is all conjecture on my part because i dont actually know, but since i have taken them apart i would think that no major damage would occur.the little bits would not be discovered until one large enough plugged the return line.they are still large enough not to get to the head.as far as governor failure,i dont think it will run away, but would just stop working under load, there is aways a shaft breakage possibility, even with dirty filters. from other posts earlier i believe the cost for the neccessary parts to fix it and labor shouldnt be more than say 150 and thats better than 700 for an exchange pump
