Hi all. I have a friend that has a starter prob. He says that when the starter is engaged the starter grinds loudly and somtimes he has to hit it a couple of times to make it work. He says the bendix looks good. He has changed the ring gear because of the damage occuring when he starts the A. He says there is no shoulder for the ring gear to set against when replacing the ring on the flywheel. Is there a dimension he needs to put the ring gear on properly? Thank for your help, Bill

It might help to shorten the rod from the starter pedal to the starter. It helped on my 1948 A.

Remove the flywheel cover and the battery cable. Press down on the starter pedal and see how far the starter gear engages the flywheel gear. It should not push up tight against the starter drive but the gears should be fully engaged. If this is operating correctly, then I would suspect you need a new starter drive. It is starting to slip inside. When this happens, the starter motor runs, but the drive gear does not.
