An older fellow I buy hay from has a John Deere H he rakes hay with. I got talking to him the other day and he says he never ever puts permanent antifreeze in it (we live in Maine). He says he doesn't dare to use it because someone told him that the antifreeze will corrode the lead washers in the block and allow antifreeze into the cylinders. He says he isn't sure whether that guy meant just for the model H or for all JD 2-cylinders. I told him my dad has run his B for almost 20 years with antifreeze in it with no problems. can anyone shed any light on this? I hate for him to have to needlessly drain his water out every time it might freeze!

Down here in Scarboro we use antifreeze.
I even used non toxic in my old B because I was not sure how much would leak out, and it worked good summer and winter.

anti-freeze should not hurt lead because lead solder is used to hold radiator cores together, some JD manuals do call for a rust inhibitor which is a good idea in any radiator equiped machine.hope this helps

The lead washers on the block are not in contact with the coolant anyway. Antifreeze will also help slow down rust corrosion. There is no way I would do without it.

Hi!
Mikes right. Antifreeze doesn't come in contact with the lead washers. The sole purpose of the lead washers is to lubricate the head stud nuts when installing the head.. Ken

Chieftain, if perment antifreeze attacked lead it couldn't be used in most cars of the 60's, 70's & 80's because they had soldered radiators & heater cores. If the antifreeze is changed every couple of years it won't be a problem. Old sour antifreeze will attack more than lead it will attack gaskets, hoses & radiators.
