I have been working on my clutch and took it all the way off the tractor, and found a stuck dog.I got it loose and put it back on and put all the clutches back in and it snapped in perfect and snapped out,but not again. The clutch pulley moves in and out about a half an inch. What would cause the pulley to move like that, and how could it be fixed?I think that when the clutch wheel moves that it overcenters the dogs, making it not lock in.This tractor had a front end loader on it for its whole life, loading and unlaoding sileage pits so it has been used and abused. Thanks fellas for any help you can give.Jack(TN)

Jack, some movement of the clutch pulley (in & out) is normal. If the crank end play is correct the movment with the clutch dis-engeged will be determined by the clutch adjustment ( space between the disks), there should be (no) pulley lateral movement with the clutch engaged. So lets look at this problem from the beginning. Is the clutch driving disk (splined disk) tight on the crank splines? If it's loose it will have to be repaired. Are all (3) "dog toggles" installed? If so are they worn? They tend to wear with lots of use. Are the (3) springs installed between the "adjusting plate" & the "pulley"? Lets start the re-assmbly, start by installing the pulley. When installing the pulley make sure the "brass" clutch collar is installed in the GROOVE on the operating sleeve (its kind of tricky), then push the pulley all the way in towards the tractor, next install the inner facing with the rounded edge towards the pulley, next install the splined driving disk (with the external splines facing out)note: make sure it is not loose when installed "when the big bolt is tightened it should become very tight on the crank", then install the two sided driving disk (the one with the 3 ears) over the the 3 pins, then install the sliding drive disk ( the non-lined one with the internal splines),then install the other two sided driving disk ( the one with 3 ears, then install the other sliding disk ( with internal splines), then install the outer facing, next install the adjusting plate (make sure the 3 release springs are in place between the plate & the pulley, now install the 3 nuts on the operating bolts, next engage the clutch then tighten the nuts untill they are all equally tight (tighten them enough to tell if they are all the same torque, I use a torque wrench), now back the off each nut one flat at a time untill the clutch engages & dis-engages correctly. Note: install the (2) facing disks over the drive pins not the operating bolts, but it will work either way.

Ok Clooney I done all of that, but what I can,t figure out is what keeps the pulley from walking side to side. That is what is happening. It is moving alot and the clutch drive disc is tight in the splines.Do you have to remove the drive gear to get the assembly apart?Could the toggles being worn cause this to happen. Thanks everybody for the assistance.

Jack, does the pulley move side to side after the clutch is engaged? It is normal for the pulley to move as the clutch is being engaged but shouldn't move after the clutch is snaped in.
The only thing that keeps that pulley in place is the clutch drive disk. If the clutch plates are loose the pulley will move until the space is taken up. Adjust that clutch tight enough so you can't engage it, then back the nuts off until you can snap it in & out. Which assembly do you want to get apart?.... To remove the pulley or "dog toggles" no, to remove the "operating sleeve" yes.
To get the pulley off the tractor you might have to remove the (2) shouldered bolts & the "clutch collar" You will have to work behind the pulley with it pulled out as far as possible... NOTE: if the pulley still moves in & out with the clutch engaged it either isn't adjusted correctly or is missing some clutch parts. Also check the "bosses" (cast on the back of pulley) that the "clutch dogs" pivot in as they have a habit of cracking.

Do you have a bearing race on the crankshaft? sounds like yours is missing .This would let the pulley move sideways. Just a thought as I've seen them come off with the pulley and fall to the ground unnoticed .

Jack sounds like you need to set the crankshaft end play by sliding the flywheel in to .005 clearance, your clutch is over traveling

The crank is set and not moving. The clutch fork is pushing out on the wheel when you disenguage the clutch, and pulling the pulley into the housing when I try to engage it.My wheel is sliding but the crank does not move.It acts like there might be a shim or spacer gone or worn out. This tractor had problems with the clutch when I bought it,and counting this one this makes one JD clutch I have worked on.The IT manual does not troubleshoot this kind of problem.Thanks.

Just a thought or two. Did you get the brass fork onto the clutch assembly right on the inside?? If it is not riding in the machined groove it will not engage. Also don't know about a 70 but a 730 has one more bonded, 2 sided clutch disk (that mounts on the studs) than a 60. Do you have all the clutch disks in?? Also the disks (if multiple) are staggered. One goes on a threaded stud and the other goes on a blind stud. I hope I've made sense, been beatin a tractor today (or it's been beatin me)and fixin to call it a DAY!!!!!

Haybaler, there are two clutch facing discs that have facings on both sides and two plain clutch discs in which one goes behind the the clutch drive disc, and the other goes behind the adjuster plate.Other than one thing you said I had them in there right. When you said staggered were you saying that I put one of the clutch facing discs on the threaded studs and the other on the smooth ones because I did not do that,I put both the clutch drive discs on the smooth studs.Could this be my problem? If so,which clutch facing disc shuld be on the threaded studs the inner or the outer?I have thought and studied the clutch wheel assembly till I am tired of looking at it and the IT manual don't show exactly which studs to put them on.This tractor was not running for over 18 years, and the way I under stood it was that it was parked due to clutch problems so it probably wasn't in there right to start with and I did not have another right here to look at to compare it to.Thanks Haybaler, you might have hit the nail on the head.I will try it that way.

I sorry I can't remember and I'm just checking my comp at work then gotta head out, tore up a tractor tire yesterday and it is gonna be a major pain to get it fixed. Will be back in Mon and will get my 730 service manual to be sure. The only other way is to tear the clutch down and the book is a lot simpler!!
