Yes , 1964 30&4020's did not have diff lock available , '65 models starting with serial## 91,000 on 4020 not sure on 3020 , had diff lock as an option not standard equipment but I have never seen a '65 or newer with out diff lock . At that time ( 1965) the diesel models also changed to the pencil type injectors and dry air cleaner was offered as an option .

Like I said it was an option from '65 on serial #91000 and up , around here (northern Illinois) every 4020 I've seen had it but that's just here . Lots of dealers sold on price and didn't put options on like dif lock , dry air cleaner , heavy clutch , longer axles , dual hydraulics etc. , we found that out when dad and I drove 100+ miles to one of those hi-volume dealers that advertised cheap 4020's .

When I worked for the JD dealer a customer brught in a 4030 with out dif lock. Was purchased by a cannery to use on a corn picker and guess they didn't want to pay the extra. On this one the ring gear had come loose, bolts fell or broke off and we put the dif lock on it while we had it apart.

I know the very first ones did not have the differential lock; near the end of the 1964 run, they started putting it on. I think all after that did have it.

Same reason that in the 1950s, there were row crop tractors ordered without 3PH or hydraulics, or power steering! The people doing the ordering thought they didn't need it and were TOO CHEAP to spring for gimcracks like that!
