Kevin, the terminal (gen or arm) on the regulator goes to (A or arm) on generator, the terminal ( F or field) on the regulator goes to (F or field) on generator, the terminal (B or batt) on regulator goes to the "AMP meter" then the other terminal on the AMP meter goes to the negitive post on the first battery, the positive post on the first battery goes to the negitive post on the second battery, the positive post on the second battery goes to ground. If the AMP meter reads backwards reverse the wires on the AMP meter. Make sure the batteries are correctly charged(correct polarity) or run them COMPLETELY down & re-charge them to the correct polarity or you could burn the regulator contact points.

You can not discharge a battery and then recharge it to a different polarity. If your tractor is set up as a positive ground then you need a voltage regulator that is made for positive ground systems. This should be stamped on the housing of the regulator. if you don't know what type of regulator you have, you can polarize the regulator by momentarily touching the BAT wire to the ARM post on the regulator.

I wish someone had told my battery it couldn't be charged backwards. I put an old 12v generator in my john deere tractor that came out of a 12v - ground truck. the battery was dead in the tractor and when it was pulled to start. it started and charged good the only problem was it charged backwards. I was told I should have polarized the new generator. I was also told you can't polorize a regulator only the generator will change polarity.
