Need help with a JD 720

I just purchased a 57 JD 720 serial # 7206166. It is an all-fuel model. I have been told this is somewhat rare. Anyone know?

The carb is in need of a rebuild. The throttle shaft is loose in the housing. We will bore out the housing and put in bushings to correct this. Anyone have any other pointers to rebuild this carb and tune it correctly?

Also, the PTO clutch does not engage and appears to be very worn out. We have not pulled the housing yet to determine the problem. Are any kits available or does the clutch pack from another tractor fit. If some of the parts are missing, where can I find a used one to rebuild and place in the tractor.

Thanks
Jonathan

I sent my carburetor to Roberts when I restored my 720 or you can diy but I strongly suggest ordering Pub#SM2024 from JD @1.800.522.7448. The pto clutch is not much fun and covered in PUB#SM 2025 and most parts are available from JD. I spent a day learning how to rebuild my first one but my 2nd went much faster with much less teeth gnashing! All fuel 720's are indeed rare and good luck with your project.

Jonathan,

Can't help on the technical details, but here are some production numbers, taken from a J.R. Hobbs article in the October 1994 Green Magazine:

Total Row Crops built - 22,925
Total Standard models built - 4,523
Total High Crops built - 125
Grand Total build - 27,573

All-Fuel models: Row crops - 408; Standards - 80; High Crops - 12.
