I rebuilt a 56,70 JD and when I just had the clutch drive disc on I could snap it in or out easy, but I went out the other day and nothing had been moved, and now it won't snap.I went ahead and put the rest of the assembly together and even left the clutch adjuster plate loose and still no snap. What could I be doing wrong?I need some advice,Thanks Jack(TN).

Jack I put new clutch disc in my 70 lp Std,I inadvertently removed the cotter key on adjusting bolt, and the toggle fell out of the operating socket. On this 70 Lp it has a dust sheild that you can't get your hand in there to put it back in,had to press the gear off the adjusting collar to get in there to put it back in place, since the was a big deal pressing this gear off,I put in three new toggle's and three new c74-R operating levers, that cotter pin removal cost the fire out of me could this be your problem . Hey Gman you might be on to something cause I got it to snap once after pulling it all out and finding a stuck dog and putting it back together. But it did not pop in again after that, now I am flustered at the stupid thing. The clutch pulley moves side to side about a half an inch, and the first time it snapped like it was supposed to it did not slide from side to side. But after that one good engaging it started sliding side to side again. My crankshaft end play is .005 thousanths clearence I double checked that.Thanks.

The clutch is an "over center" type,
good snap action is the result of proprer adjustment,
poor or no snap action will result in excessive wear or nonoperation,
adjustment is made by turning the actuator ring on it's fine threaded shaft,
a bolt/clamp affair that revolves with the ring must be loosened before adjustment can be performed,
very large changes in snap action result from very small changes in adjustment.
The over center clutch is one of the least understood and yet one of the simplest of mechanical devices,
there are revolving toggle joint links in there that give tremendous mechanical advantage to the lever when properly adjusted,
It does not hurt to take the whole thing apart and observe how it works
I got my first experience with over center clutches on cable tool drilling machines--the clutches on them are open and you can watch them work

OK lets see if we can get this straight,
I just talked to Ted who has thousands of hours experience in the fields with those from the 1930s to present times.
Everything I said is true except the adjustment method.
The three nuts with cotter keys must be adjusted for evenness around the plates. this is accomplishesd by first tightrning them all down to = snugness, (this is where the torque wrench comes in but most of the old boys did not have one in the field) then you back the nuts equally by counting the castle nut slots as they pass the key hole in the bolt. Adjust the nuts out or in until it takes about 40 pounds pressure on the end of the hand lever to engage the clutch.
A quickie adjustment could be done in the field by simply tightening the nuts each 1/6 of a turn until the lever feels right.

Jack, I dont know why you would have had a snap with just the drive disk on, with the clutch fully put togather, you will have to turn the three nuts on the adjuster plate, inward in equal amounts a little at a time till you get a good snap when the clutch leaver is ingaged. maby someone else has some insite. luck.

Same here Zbar. Have to reduce cleareance between plates to get snap.. See post earlier about using torque wrench to set clutch, it is the only way to go.
