Does anyone know what the problem was in the rearend or the trans in a 4430 ? I have heard that there was some kind of update kit that solved the problem. Any information would be helpfull.

I had a rear end failure on my 4430. I was told that the spider gear pin retaining bolt was too small to hold in the pin. This bolt failed and the spider pin slid out locking the rear end up. I was in road gear when it happend and it wiped out the rear casing. This happend in 1980 and I dont remember what exactly the dealer replaced in the rear, but I have been using the tractor ever since for heavy field work and have never had any more trouble with it. The tractor is a early tractor, 1974 with a 4 digit serial #. The red warning light that cones on when you have hydraulic problems should be green and have a dollar symbol in it! When that light came on in my 4430 when the rear failed, thats what it meant!!! Hope this helps Bill in Mich

The biggest problem was the final drive planetary gears. Later 4430's have 51mm wide gears, and a lot of the early ones have been modified, from the 1.5" original. Like Dave said about the diff., the tractors that tended to have problems were those that were weighted heavy, turned up, & pulled hard.

Some 4430's that were used heavy and tractors that had the horsepower tweaked would fail the original two pinion differential. The replacement differential is a three pinion like the 4440 uses. Ussally this failure would result in damage to the diff. case and when ordering parts they would sub you the complete three pinion case assembly. There is alot of 4430's out there still running the original differintials that never had problems.
