Guys are correct on the + ground. The severe jumping of the ammeter indicates that quite possibly somebody has polarized the charging system with the battery in - ground and is using the original + ground reglator. Regulators are built to have current flow from one contact to the other as it passes through the regulator points. The metal in one contact is different from the other because one is a + contact while the other is a - contact. This is why regulators are built for + ground or - ground. When current is passed through them in the wrong direction, the points stick, jump & chatter, arc, try to weld themselves together & do all sorts of odd things. Think about trying to DC weld in reverse polarity with a straight only rod! Not nice! Regulator points will do the same thing so the other guys are very correct. You'll be very lucky if you do not need a new regulator.

I agree with Ol Doug there. It came out positive ground so change that, re polarize the voltage regulator, and see what happens. Ol John T in Indiana

Yep, positive ground.

Change this and see if it fixes your problem. If it still wont charge, have the generator checked, but you will probably need a voltage regulator.

Hope this helps, Doug.
