Question? I have a 1937 JD "B" Hand Start which was running last year fine. I havent started it for about one year now but its in my barn under roof and about every eight weeks or so I turn the hand start flywheel over a few turns to keep the piston free...The other day I had a visitor looking at my tractors and he turned the hand start flywheel backwords(Clockwise)about half a turn and it stoped there! Now its stuck at that position, cant turn it either way C.W. or C.C.W. HELP does anybody have any ideas? Dont want to force the flywheel or break anything...Its one of my pride and joys of my toys...THANKS in advance....Ron

Ron, in my opinion the unstyled B's had plenty problems in insufficient oil getting to the valves so I agree with Mike there and think its more a stuck valve problem then a bad or stuck area in the cylinder wall somewhere. I suspect a valve is stuck in the closed position and the stick is when the pushrod/cam/rocker arm tries to open it. Removwe the valve cover and it will be easy to tell if thats where shes binding up and dont force the flywheel in teh meantime or you could bend a pushrod. Ol John T in Indiana

Ron, Mike sounds right about the valves. I would first pull the Sparkplugs and put oil in the Cylinders. Let it set for a few min. with the oil in the cyl. If you have any gas leaking by and going into the Cylinders it will wash out the oil film on the pistons and cause the engine to act like it is locked up. My wifes AO will do the same thing if to much fuel gets into the cyl. First you might feel it getting tight as you pull over the flywheel, then if you do not get it to start the engine locks up. Yours might have done this, fuel leaking into the engine. My wifes AO is not the first John Deere I have seen do it. I have seen a 1934 open fanshaft A do the same, except it gave you no warning, it would lock up. After you put the oil in the cyl. you might have to put some slight pressure on the flywheel to get it to turn over.

Sounds like a problem in the valves. I would pull the cover and have a look. Pretty easy to fix usualy. Mike

If you check the rocker arm assy and valves and find everything freed up, check your oil pump. If the gears in there get tight for any reason it will not allow the flywheel to turn over. The pump is turned by the shaft driven by the camshaft which is driven by the crank as you probably know. I have had them lock up after sitting for a while. May not be the answer but you can check it. Good Luck
