The lower sliding pinion gear, when engaged, does not fully mesh with the upper 4th-6th drive gear. I would say that the sliding pinion, when engaged, is 1/8" to 3/16" from fully meshing with the upper drive gear.

I feel comfortable that I installed the transmission correctly. The sliding gear shaft bearing (upper) is against the shaft shoulder and the bearing is between the two snap rings - so the shaft should be okay. The 4th-6th shifter shaft cannot be adjusted. The detents determine the positions of the sliding pinion (lower) gear.

Is it normal that the gears do not fully mesh (engage)?

I will appreciate any help with this situation.

I replaced the countershaft idler gear. Dismantled transmission and rest of tractor. Cleaned it up, put in new pawls, springs, bearings,and gaskets. The c/s idler had chipped teeth from engaging powershaft. Previous owner(s) did not stop tractor before engaging p/s.

The shifter shaft on the 4th-6th drive gear and sliding pinion is not adjustable. The spring and pawl needs to be in good condition set screw holding shifter in place neens to be in the hole and tight and the set screw which holds the fork in place should be tight and in hole.

That's my problem in reassembly. The sliding pinion on the bottom shaft, even when the shifter shaft is in the correct detent, the gear is about 3/16" from fully engaging the 4th-6th drive gear.
