Although I consider my self to be a fairly good mechanic, I am having a problem figuring out the pto on our 430. Is there aa electric clutch which engages it. The belt for the fan turns fine, but for some reason, the clutch assembly for the pto does not engage when the lever is actuated. Any help would be appreciated.

I know exactly what your saying. I loved to sit in the local truck stop and look at all the big rigs. Man there were sure some nice ones back then. You still see some of them around. That's one of the reasons I like to restore these old tractors. Cheers emschram

there is a switch in the seat that senses operator presence, if this witch is OPEN the pto wouldn't work.

I have a 420 L&G tractor and on mine I adjusted the front clutch it has to be 0.018 in. between the rotor and armature. Also with the tractor not running turn the key and flip the switch and note whether you here the click at the clutch.

I've had a similar problem with the electric PTO clutches on my JD 322 and had to set the 0.018" gap in the clutch. Once you have determined that the problem is not electrical, then adjust the gap.

I also put some Loctite on the adjusting nuts so that they won't loosen due to vibration.

It could be alot of things and its hard to tell when we can't see it. It could be the seat safety switch, the pto switch, open fuse, broken wire going to the clutch, bad clutch ground, bad clutch, both clutch belts broke or the tension idler pulley for the two belts could be loose. Hope this doesn't scare you, good luck.
