Controversy over Slant Dash B's

I have a 1941 Slant dash B with 6 speed trans and 7" lights Serial number 98623. My gear shift lever comes out of the tranny bends torward the back of the tractor (to avoid hitting the dash) and then goes back up again. My question is most everything I have read or heard is that Deere only built slant dashes in '39 and '40. I have seached the archives of this site and found that some people have A's with slant dashes clean up to 1947. My B seems very original, especially the gear shifter, and I am wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of a Slant Dash B above 1940? Also I have a parts B that seems to have longer rear axle shafts than the other B's I have. Did they have optional length axles? Thanks, Jason

Oh contrar! The slant dash B is rare. From what I have found out, less then 15% of the 39 and 40 (those were the only years) B's had them. They were only on the electric version. There was also a conversion package.
These tractors are also called the 'long nose' B as they are slightly longer.
You have a winner in this tractor. But don't believe everything you are told. Most people think that if they are styled, then they are mostly the same. Not for 39 and 40.
I have one. For those that know B's, they stop and look twice.

Hi Jason, the electric start A's had the slant dash through 1946, but the electric start B's went to a flat dash at approx. SN 96000. According to the parts book yours should be the flat dash. Around here the slant dash bring a premium price. I always thought I'd like to have one of them. Good luck, Don

Jason, there is nothing rare about the slant dash JDs, I have 2 46 As with slant dash. That was JDs first elec start models, with the battery under the hood, later ones had the battery under the seat, with a vertical dash. The shifter you are refering to is a hi-low shifter. you have a 6 speed trans, that was refered to as a 3 speed trans. with the shifter in the lo position you have 1st, 2nd, 5th, and rev. in the hi position you have 3rd, 4th, and 6th. You will not have rev in the hi side. rev was fast enough in the low side. hope this helps.
