I have a 39 John Deere A that I pull at antique tractor pulls, dead weight on asphalt, and if I let tractor idle for very long, the plugs foul. When I use the tractor working it it runs like a champ and never fouls the plugs. Teh plugs seem to carbon up, I am using Autolite 66 plugs with inserts, have tried champions and AC but same thing happens. Thanks

Earl, you might go to "site search", put in "spark plugs" on this board, and have a look at #44 or so, "spark plugs again", I posted a listing for NGK plugs, they may do the job for you if mixture doesn't help entirely.

Earl, as youre probably already aware, at no load idle the temp combustion chamber range is low and the residue fails to burn off the plug eventually leading to fouling. Have you tried the next fewer heat range of hotter plugs yet?? The hotter plug generally has a deeper reach and is designed to operate at a higher temperature which may help in your situation. Also, at idle or parading I run my jets as lean as possible which helps prevent the problem you spoke of then I open them up if pulling a load. Short of running an electronic high energy ignition, the only suggestios I have are hotter plugs and a leaner idle. Ol John T in Indiana

Thanks, I will try to lean the carb up some and see if it helps!

My A was doing the same thing and I was told by many that todays fuel is the culprut. In my case however I found a compression leak between the cyl's caused by a bad head gasket. For some reason replacing the head gasket completly eliminated the problem.

What should the compression on this be it is hand crank and can we get a good test?
