I was reassembling a JD 70 and the head gasket did not have anything written on it as far as front or back. Both sides looked exactly the same so I took the side of the gasket that the arrow was on,and turned it toward the head side.Is that ok,or am I in for a blown head gasket? This gasket was different from the one that came off of it.The old one was copper and this one looked like a three piece gasket that is aluminum colored.I did not soak it in oil either and it is already on and torqued down.

I just did my 48 A last fall and found the new gaskets for it are not marked and will not soak up oil as someone else here has stated. The A runs fine!

Just closed up a '48A a few weeks back. The new head gaskets are as you say different from the old ones. Both sides appear the same. New ones seem to have some sort of shiny coating on them. I thought I'd see if oil would soak into it. It didn't. Oil beads up & rolls right off like water off a goose! I put him together & it runs just fine!

My 830 manual sez smooth side toward block it had what i'll call a flange on one side that was where the pieces were held together. go plow 20 acres then retourque and you should be fine.

I just installed the head on 70lp ,I think the smooth side like the other guy said goes against the block but probably won't make that much difference since you're going to farm 500 acres with it. I never soak in oil, but do use copper coat, but DON"T spray it on the gasket! spray it on the head and block .
