What could be easier than setting the timing on a 420W? The shop manual says to line up the horizontal mark on the flywheel with the marks on the block housing, rotor fully advanced. Well I did it, both static and dynamic, and the tractor is now slow to reach fast idle, slow to return to slow idle, and sluggish. Distributor worn out? How does the ignition timing advance on these tractors?

Don't sound like timming altogether sound more like the governor flyweights are sticky or the linkage is binding on something, the governor is located under the fan adjuster on the front, there are flyweights in the dist. also, drop a few drops of oil on the felt under the rotor then put the rotor on and twist it by hand both directions and see if it will move some each way, it should.

Rotor moves both ways as you mentioned. I presume turning the rotor counterclockwise, looking down from the top, advances the timing.
I disconnected the governor-carb linkage and it makes no difference. I've got to wonder now if it isn't a carb problem or vacuum leak somewhere. Seems like when you change one thing, another related setting can change and mislead you to the wrong diagnosis. Any other suggestions out there?

You may need to check the diameter of the butterfly plate it can wear out of round and let fuel and air around it uncontrolably until the vacuum gradully decreases. That may explain the slow idle down but not the slow incresase still may be vacuum there too.Just something else to thinkabout.Mike
