I have a new cork gasket for my valve cover on a JD B. What is the proper way to install it so it won't leak? Do I soak it in oil? My manual says to shellac it. What does this mean?
Thank-you.

I would permatex the gasket to the valve cover and then let it dry. When it has dried I would install the valve cover without using any permatex on the cylinder head side.

Gasket shellac is not like wood finishing shellac. It stays sticky. If you put gasket shellac on both sides of the gasket the gasket won't move when you install the valve cover. Of course when you need to remove that gasket, you will need a heavy duty scraper to take off the shellac and the cork that sticks to it. You can use grease or Permatex to keep the gasket in place or you can just be careful.

It will not leak without any sealant, however I use some sealer to hold in place.
